Giants place Umenyiora on IR

Football Betting Lines

08/25/2008 - East Rutherford, NJ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - New York Giants defensive end Osi was placed on injured reserve Monday and will miss the entire 2008 season after injuring his left knee in Saturday's 10-7 preseason loss to the New York Jets.

Umenyiora had to be carted off the field in the second quarter of Saturday's setback, and an MRI on Sunday revealed a torn lateral meniscus. Opting against short-term rehab, New York decided to plan for the long-term and the pass- rusher will undergo surgery on Tuesday.

The procedure will keep New York's only Pro-Bowl selection from last season on the sideline for the 2008 campaign.

Since being selected in the second round (56th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft, Umenyiora has recorded 41 1/2 sacks. Last season he led the Giants with 13 sacks and added seven tackles in Big Blue's Cinderella postseason run.

Umenyiora started all 16 games last season for the Giants and earned his second Pro Bowl selection after totaling 52 tackles along with the 13 sacks.

In related news, the team announced earlier on Monday that Mathias Kiwanuka will be moved back to defensive end.

A first-round draft pick in 2006, Kiwanuka was moved from defensive end to strongside linebacker last season where he started until breaking his left fibula against the Detroit Lions in Week 11. Kiwanuka finished the 2007 season with 45 tackles and 4 1/2 sacks in 10 games.

The move was designed to replace Umenyiora, and decreases the chances that the defending Super Bowl champs will make a push to lure Michael Strahan out of retirement.

The New York Daily News reported on Monday that Strahan, the Giants' all-time sack leader, would consider coming out of retirement for $8 million and "a few kind words."

Strahan, who now works for FOX Sports as a studio analyst, retired in the offseason after helping the Giants upset the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.

2007 NFL Football Betting Preview

“You play to win the game!”

Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.

The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.

The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.

Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?

Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.

New York Giants betting lines

Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.

Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.

Dallas Cowboys betting lines

Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.

The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.

Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.

Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.

Oakland Raiders betting lines

This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.

First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”

The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.

Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.
